History: | This Belgian jacquard tapestry Bayeux Navigio shows an extract from the extraordinary Bayeux tapestry. In this scene we see the voyage of Duke William and his lords and crew across the sea in summer, to their eventual landing in England. Their course changed England's history as Duke William became the first Norman ruler in England. This detail of the boats and crew with their shields on display is a favorite scene from the 230 ft long original tapestry. There is also a border of mythological creatures which is an ever present decorative motif. The original Bayeux tapestry is some 230 feet long, it is on display in the Bayeux museum in Normandy. It describes how England was conquered by Normans. This piece adds an air of sophistication as it displays one of histories most historical moments. |
