History: | Unmistakable in its style, this Belgian jacquard woven wall tapestry, Sleeping Danae, is based on the work of Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). The Sleeping Danae by Klimt portrays a legendary figure of Danae, who was visited by Zeus in the form of golden shower after which she became pregnant. Klimt used the red or golden haired femme fatale on many occasions, to represent the ecstasy of love and here we see the golden haired lady sleeping. Sumptuous reds, gold, and crimson create water-like eddies along with fish and water plants to create a surreal underwater scene. The use of patterns and color in a florid fantasy like style is a hallmark of his work. Born in Baumgarten, Vienna, in Austria, he attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, and developed his style over this period |
