History: | Flanders Poppies Belgian chenille tapestry is reminiscent of a drawing from a medieval herbal, you see the poppy in various stages of its life: just opening on the right; in full bloom in the center; and aging quickly at the bottom left. The Flanders poppy has been the symbol of remembrance and reverence for our war dead since World War I. John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields” so inspired American Moina Michael that she began the tradition of the Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy. Due to her tireless championship, the American Legion adopted the poppy. Madame E. Guérin then took up the campaign internationally and both women are called the “Poppy Lady.” |
