| History: | Galathea is an Italian jacquard woven wall tapestry inspired by Triumph of Galatea, a fresco by Raffeallo Sanzio (1512). Here we see Galatea, a figure in Roman mythology, surrounded by other mythological figures such as tritons and sea nymphs as she rides a shell chariot that is drawn by two dolphins. Galatea is meant to symbolize ideal beauty. The original is displayed in Rome at the Villa Farnesina. |
