History: | Nascita di Venere - Sandro Botticelli is an Italian jacquard wall tapestry. The artwork is from the famous painting, The Birth of Venus, created in 1484 by Sandro Botticelli, the great Italian Master. This work reveals the goddess Venus emerging from the sea in her clam shell. It is believed to have been commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de'Medici. Others speculate that it was painted in honor of Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci, beloved by both Giuliano di Piero de' Medici and the artist Botticelli. Those who favor this story believe that Simonetta herself was the model for Venus. |
